Atargatis, the Phoenician Great Goddess, is a powerful deity of ancient Assyrian times most often depicted as a mother with the lower body of a fish, symbolizing her connection to water and fertility. The name is Semitic, and in Phoenician, 'Athtart' - most agree the first half of the name is a form of the name Athtar (aka Astarte) while the second part is more problematic, and various interpretations of the whole of Her name are: "Atar the Daughter/Mother of 'Ate", "the Fish Goddess Atar", or "Atar the Favorable One". While she may be an ancient being, her influence extends to our times, flush through the culture and politics of the American South.

POST-MODERN WOMEN iN 1990s ATLANTA: In the state of Georgia, Atargatis' connection to water and fertility gives meaning to the region's relationship with nature and agriculture. Her aquatic form represents a rich current of life flowing through the state's rivers and lakes, vital for sustenance and culture for centuries. Not far from Her temple is a sacred lake, filled with many varieties of fish, Her sacred animal. The celebration of Atargatis continues in contemporary folk arts, fashion, folklore, music, myths, literature, culture and faith. We pray to Atargatis. Our hidden societies revere Her.

The state's historical ties to Christianity have led to a unique blend of religious and mythological elements where acolytes draw parallels between Atargatis and Biblical figures like Esther or the prophetess Miriam, intertwining Her with the spiritual culture of Georgia. Her representation as a powerful goddess inspires feminist and equality movements. In the 3rd century, men would castrate themselves for Atargatis. When the Atlanta Braves opened their stadium in the late 1990s, Atlantans were left wondering if the underground capstone of a witch with the lower body of a snake or fish held any spiritual significance. This mysterious artifact, concealed deep within the foundations of Turner Field, was said to be a symbol of protection and prosperity for the team, its presence serving as subtle tribute to the ancient goddess. While the exact location remains shrouded in secrecy, the character of Atargatis finds resonance in Atlanta in the forms of modern witches, connected to the ancient goddess through their own stories, rituals and beliefs. The image of Atargatis as a symbol of strength and fertility aligns with the aspirations of occultist women in Georgia who seek empowerment.

Modern literature, art, and music draw inspiration from Atargatis and Her stories serve as a source of creativity and interpretation contributing to rural Georgia's culture. While Atargatis' direct influence on Southern politics may be less evident, Her mythological attributes influence the culture and values of the region, impacting the perspectives and decisions of its people and Her legacy endures in modern-day pop culture and society, where Her ancient myth continues to find resonance and inspire new interpretations.

Hidden under the city, in the mountains, in the valleys, we pray to Atargatis. It is Her desire that we recognize the power and innate beauty of all life and are guided to recognize our connections to nature and the universe, as well as the special power of women. We pray to Atargatis. She guides us to understand the hidden things of the universe. We pray to Atargatis! We must pray, follow our dreams, and be prepared to fight the Enemy.
